The Matter of the Crown Linda Ferreri 9781495486173 Books

The book’s story kicks off with the kidnapping of the mysterious Avi Valencia from her villa in a hill town in central Italy. Surprises quickly ensue. A complex, modern-day plot moves smartly from a prominent Manhattan auction house, to sumptious residences on two continents, to an Adriatic cruise ship and even to a ramshackle Italian farm.

A second, historical plot centers on the crown and the adoration of the Virgin. Along the way, it involves papal intrigues and visits remarkable monuments of medieval and renaissance architecture.

The Matter of the Crown has a number of charming characters, though each – disturbingly – seems to have her own agenda. The book tracks the work of two bright and incisive investigators. Former Italian policeman Baldo, who retired because he thought he had lost his insightfulness, proves himself wrong as he unravels the clues to murder. American Claire Bliss, a brilliant art law attorney waylaid by personal tragedy, juggles clues about the crown’s theft and its abiding mystery. The two bring the plot to a surprising resolution that clicks like a finely made lock.

The Matter of the Crown affords impressive lessons on art, history, religion and human greed.

The Matter of the Crown Linda Ferreri 9781495486173 Books Reviews

THE MATTER OF THE CROWN by Linda Ferreri is a layered story brimming with historical detail and art references throughout.

Taking the reader from the auction houses of Manhattan to the rolling Italian countryside with plenty of stunning scenery in between, we are taken on an adventure to find the Crown of the Andes, a sacred and precious object that has been stolen. But what has this got to do with Avi disappearing from her home in a quiet village? And who will be able to uncover the mystery?

While I enjoyed the premise of this story it was a little confusing at the start but persevere and it will all slot into place. I know next to nothing about art and art history so I found the detail and description in this area illuminating, interesting, and it really added to the story.

The characters are well-rounded and while I didn't become overly invested in any of them, I still wanted to know how the story would end for them all. Overall I found THE MATTER OF THE CROWN by Linda Ferreri to be a solid story and it would definitely suit anyone who loves the art world.

*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the blog tour organiser
This is a suspense filled mystery with the priceless Crown of the Andes in the centre of all the action. I admit to being initially somewhat perplexed as in the first three chapters three different and seemingly unrelated characters are introduced. Avi Valencia is an artist, living in Italy but obviously wary with all the security measures in her home. The second is Alfred Granfield. He likes everything ordered and familiar but has a keen interest in art and frequently travels to secure objects which draw his attention in auctions around the world. The third character is Claire Bliss, a young lady who had been seriously injured and is endeavouring to give herself the opportunity to fully heal by seeking therapy on an Adriatic cruise. At that point I initially assumed I'd missed something but no, keep on reading to discover what happens to them and to the Crown in this story which calls for detective skills as the story progresses.

The elements to the story include murder, misdirection, theft, secrets and religious portents. You'll get to meet one of my favourite characters. Baldo, a retired policeman and now a handyman. It is easy to spot who the thief is but there are other undercurrents and plenty of danger to keep you reading. It is Baldo, together with the American Art lawyer, Claire Bliss, who help lead the investigations which span different continents.

The author's intimate and in depth knowledge of art history is demonstrated throughout in the descriptions of artefacts, places and events. The plot has twists and turns aplenty to keep your turning the pages and the conclusion brings everything to a highly satisfactory conclusion.

I requested and received a copy of this novel. This is my honest review after choosing to read it.
The Matter of the Crown by Linda Ferreri is a thriller about the heist of one of the most precious and sacred objects, the Crown of Andes. I never knew that such an object existed but it is, in fact, quite a treasure (just look at the cover pic!).

The ancient treasure, the Crown of Andes is up for auction at the Satterling’s. Despite the best security arrangements, it disappears from the stage right under everyone’s noses. The art lawyer, Claire and a retired policeman, Baldo are sucked into this whirlwind of crime and theft but are determined to find out the crown’s whereabouts. But can they stop the perpetrators before damage has been done?

OK, I’ll be honest here. At first, I really didn’t understand what was going on, to the extent that I wanted to stop reading. There are characters to whom confusing things happen, and all the while I was waiting for the moment when the crown would be stolen! But going forward, the story falls into place and things seemed a little interesting.

The author has an in depth knowledge of the crown and she has put it to good use here. There are a lot of references to art and history related to the crown and it is interesting to read them if you are new to the crown, like me. But honestly, I didn’t really love the book. I simply did not like the pace that the story took, it was way too slow for me.

On the other hand, the descriptions and narrative were commendable. If you are an art lover or an enthusiast of the aforementioned crown, you’d probably enjoy this book more. I did have a lot of hopes pinned on this one but, personally, for me it just lacked the neck breaking speed that is synonymous with thrillers of such genres.

Overall, an okay read for me.
a great gift for your library, and all who love art, history, mystery and spirituality.come see the real crown when it will be shown for public view.
Very Interesting and historical. You want to get to the next page to see what is about to happen, I love it
