Labeled Chappell's break out novel and now I know why! Fans who have followed Charlie, Thomas, and Harley Ponyboy through past adventures should prepare for the most gripping, dangerous, and heart thumping ride yet. In addition to a Navajo Nation Mystery this is an intense western thriller like nothing I've ever read before and very likely to gain Chappell an entire new legion of fans. Though many compare Chappell to Tony HIllerman he has always been his own writer and this book, his best yet, shatters any mold. How does one of Mexico's bloodiest predators come to stalk the innocents of the Navajo Reservation? Is he the man who will finally prove too much for Charlie, Thomas and Harley? I won't give any spoilers but I can tell you I held my breath for all three at different points in this great story. The true western detail is something anyone who loves Larry McMurtry's early novels will appreciate but it's Michael Crighten fans who will dig into the sheer intensity. I could barely flip the pages fast enough at some points and yet I was afraid to for fear of what would come! This is all thriller and the mystery comes not in a "whodunnit" type way but in a "what the heck will happen next ??!!" way. There are times you'll want to cry, apply the brakes and in one memorable moment cheer!! I'm only sorry it's over, until the next mystery unfolds!Tags : Mojado: A Navajo Nation Mystery - Kindle edition by R. Allen Chappell. Mojado A Navajo Nation Mystery edition by R Allen Chappell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was a more conventional mystery than others by this author. The continuing characters, however, are fascinating, believable, and imperfect. When I began reading this series, I had doubts about it -- thinking that it might be derivative of Tony Hillerman's books, but Chappell carves out his own world for his characters. I gave it 4 stars because the author could have used a good editor.
Navaho Autumn .. Boy Made Of Dawn .. Ancient Blood ... This Number 4 MOJADO which is as fast paced exciting and complex as some of Mr. Tony Hillermens .. Leaphorn .. tales was a terrific read. I just got number 5 "Magpie" and its another excellent Navaho Indian tribute. I love the characters. Charlie Yazzie .. Harley Ponyboy ... Grandpa Paul T'sosi .. Thomas Begay ... Lucy Tallwoman .. to name a few ... Total individuals with unique personalities and the stories he weaves around their lives are great. He puts me on the reservation. I hope he keeps these stories comin. I recommend this whole series.
The most exciting entry so far in Chappell's enjoyable Navajo Nation series. A truly gripping thriller with a truly evil yet very human bad guy. It's fine to read as a stand alone book; your enjoyment is enhanced when it is read after the earlier books but only for character development. No plot points in this book rely on anything revealed in an earlier book. Highly recommended!
WOW! This was a pretty bumpy adventure for Harley, Charley and Thomas. Even though this is the fourth book in this series, it is definitely a stand-alone story. The threesome, friends since childhood, have been on other risk taking adventures; however, this is one heck of a bold undertaking to bring in a fugitive that does not intend to be taken alive. This was one really mean and evil so-and-so that did not hesitate to take the life of anyone that got in his way. A few poor souls did just that, and you can probably guess what happened to them!
The story was well-crafted with constant twists and turns and just the right amount of surprises. The villain was described so vividly that you could easily visualize him, and he was definitely not someone you would want to meet in the dark.....or daylight either. In fact, all the characters were depicted in such a way that made the reader feel they were watching the encounters firsthand.
The author did a splendid job with character development, accurately and vividly describing the landscape of the area. There was no rambling and the Native American lingo and customs added just the right amount of seasoning for a well-prepared story. A glossary and notes, at the back of the book, was very helpful and interesting; however, it was a bit tedious to use when reading from a format. Not as easy to flip back and forth as in a paper book.
I felt this book in the series was a step up from the previous ones. Kudos to the author for a job well done. I look forward to more in this series, and definitely recommend to fans of Native American adventure stories or to anyone that enjoys action-packed suspenseful thrillers. This book is one I have put away in my “keeper” file.
Charlie Yazzie, Thomas Begay, and Harley Ponyboy continue as protagonists in this gripping Navajo Mystery series. The story begins with Thomas and Harley pursuing a young cow and her calf. The boys soon find the calf up to his neck in quicksand. While working to rescue the calf they make a grizzly discovery, the body of someone we'll soon learn is the victim of a relentless serial killer.
Luca Tarango, the Majado had fled Mexico in a van operated by a coyotero when it crashed in Navajo territory. Soon after the crash Luca becomes the only survivor. Luca escapes on foot traveling north toward Colorado to find his ex-wife. He will leave a path of death, bodies of those who cross his path.
Charlie Yazzie, Thomas Begay, and Harley Ponyboy know the land and the people, the Diné, and of all involved in the search to find the Majado their tracking ability and knowledge of the terrain allow them to put maximum pressure on the fugitive.
Charlie and the boys come to recognize the risks as it soon becomes evident just how ruthless their quarry is. To make matters worse, many of the victims are among friends and family.
This is the greatest challenge Charlie Yazzie, Thomas Begay, and Harley Ponyboy have faced so far.
R. Allen Chappell uses his knowledge of The Navajo Nation (Naabeehó Bináhásdzo), its people, their beliefs, superstitions and skill to create a riveting tale that draws in the reader.
