You know, I have to admit, before I get to this review, that I'd almost given up on the romance genre. And I used to LOVE romance books! For the last two years all the books I've been reading seemed to be the same thing--abusive man meets virgin woman/girl; they have sex and fall in love. And I'm really sick of this plot. It's done already, okay? Where were the mentally healthy men and women? Sure, in the books the women/girls would be plucky and have some spirit, but they were usually a little on the stupid side, and would need to get saved by the wounded hero, who would yell at her and never apologize. And she would just know he was sorry, under all that macho crap. I really had to wonder if the majority of romance writers were drinking the same water that induced Stockholm syndrome.

But this book, Rafe's Redemption, redeemed the romance genre for me. Rafe is the hero, obviously, and, yes, he's emotionally wounded, but if he's harsh, he apologizes for it. And, yes, Maggie is a virgin, but she's not stupid, and although Rafe seems at first to save her from a bad situation, it is Maggie, in the end, who saves Rafe. And--and!--it's understandable why Rafe is the way he is. He's a Civil War vet, and I've read some of the other reviews here, but I've actually been around a lot of vets. Some men seem to be okay if they have been forced to kill another human being, and some others are not okay. Even in kill or be killed situations, these men feel a lot of guilt, and it's such a relief to finally read from an author who gets that. Yes, I want to read my romances as an escape, but I'm so tired of romance writers escaping from basic human psychology that it stereotypes men as too cold and distant, and women as bumbling fools, who love the men enough to crack a little warmth into their heartless condition. That only perpetuates abuse, and I'm sick it!

Thank you, Ms. Jakes, for writing something that I can actually enjoy, but not only am I a huge fan of yours now, but thanks to you I just might try another romance . . . maybe. But for sure, I'll look for more of your books.

I thoroughly enjoyed this western historical romance novel. It's my first Jennifer Jakes novel, but it definitely will not be my last! I actually already own copies of her novella Twice In A Lifetime and her second novel Eden's Sin. This story is completely amazing! It's beautifully executed, with a wonderful plot, and fabulous characters. As a matter of fact, Rafe and Maggie--the H and h--are two of the most amazing protagonist I've ever encountered in my extensive reading career. It's hard to believe this is a debut novel!

Maggie is strong, independent, reliable, loyal, brave, and true. You can't go wrong with Maggie in your corner! She grew up wealthy, but her upbringing was anything but pampered. Maggie is a woman who knows how to get her hands dirty! Rafe is a quintessential tortured hero. He is a wonderful, kind, caring man, protective, and possessive, he's also bossy as heck! Poor Rafe also has absolutely no idea of his worth! He suffers immense guilt from his past, and has not only been disowned by his family, but also rejected by the woman to whom he'd been engaged. Rafe is sure that once Maggie gets to know him, she too will want to have nothing to do with him. Rafe's lack of self-worth touched me on a very personal level; I felt a real connection to him. As such, I was never happier than when he finally got his HEA with a woman as wonderful as Maggie.

The book starts off like gangbusters, with Maggie's unscrupulous cousin and guardian putting her up for auction to a bunch of seedy characters, in order to cover his gambling debts. Rafe, in town to purchase supplies and intent on minding his own business, nevertheless gets involved when he finds himself making the purchasing bid on Maggie, not being able to stand by and watch while she falls into the clutches of any of the reprobates in attendance at the "auction."

Rafe then whisks Maggie off to his mountain retreat--albeit reluctantly. He is sure she is one of those useless women who only knows how to "pour tea, buy dresses, pout, and look pretty." Pretty much as soon as he gets Maggie back to his cabin, Rafe discovers his first impression of Maggie is far from correct and he has to eat his words--along with "the best damn meal he'd had in months." LOL From there the story quickly develops to its conclusion, complete with a heartwarming HEA.

The chemistry between Rafe and Maggie is electric...Rafe wants Maggie something fierce, but is determined to keep his hands off of her. Furthermore, he doesn't believe that he deserves a woman as wonderful as Maggie and is sure that if she knew the truth about him, she too would abandon him as fast as his erstwhile fiancée and family did. Therefore, the only thing Rafe wants more than to bed Maggie is to get her on her way ASAP. But, a host of events, the weather being chief among them, wreaks havoc with Rafe's plans, and he finds himself stuck with Maggie, all the while fighting an intense attraction to the fiery woman.

In an attempt to keep Maggie at arms length, Rafe is ornery, mean, and downright antisocial at times. Maggie can't wait to get away from the bad-tempered oaf, even while she experiences erotic dreams about the two of them! LOL Moreover, despite his best intentions, Rafe cannot completely hide the wonderful man that he is and Maggie comes to realize what a good, kind, caring, man he is. As the two spend time together and get to know each other, their relationship quickly blossoms into love.

Before Maggie and Rafe can achieve their HEA; however, they have many obstacles to overcome, not the least of which is a man from Rafe's past who wants revenge and is intent on killing him. Furthermore, Maggie's villainous cousin remains a threat, and she has to get back to St. Louis to claim her inheritance before he can gamble it all away. Nonetheless, the romance between Maggie and Rafe is front and center throughout the entire book--and what a sweet romance it is! The love Maggie and Rafe have for one another is all consuming.

As much as I liked this book I did have a couple of issues with it--minor issues to be sure, but worth mentioning. First of all, the book could use some editing in order to give it a final polish. There were many times that I noticed words missing (such as "a", "the", "he" "not" and the like) as well as misplaced words, misspelt words, and misused words --for instance "usual" used instead of "usually." Although the errors I encountered occurred regularly, and were noticeable, they in no way detracted from my enjoyment of the story--and I am usually a stickler when it comes to grammar, spelling, and the like (it can prove most distracting.)

The second issue I had--and it wasn't an issue for me, but could be for potential readers--is the sexual content. I don't have a problem with sex in my novels, so long as it doesn't overshadow the romance. In this story I would have to say, while the sex in no way overshadowed the romance, it was bordering on becoming redundant. I was at the point where if there was one more sexual encounter I was going to skip it, but thankfully there was not. It's not just the full-blown love scenes either, as in addition to those there are a number of scenes that are quite erotic, although the couple don't actually make it to home base--if you know what I mean. LOL In any event, if you don't like sex in your romance novels then this is not the book for you. If you like a lot of sex, then this one is a winner, and if you're like me--I can take it or leave it--this book should prove OK in that department.

In any event, no matter the two issues I raised, I still give this book 5 stars. It was THAT amazing! Kudos to you Ms. Jakes, you got a home run on your first time up at the plate (WHY do I sound like a baseball fan?!!) I loved this book and would highly recommend it as a fabulous read!
