Forty plus years ago I read the complete Lensmen series by the Sci Fi Hall of Fame EE Doc Smith. Masters of the Vortex is the last in the EPIC 5 star plus Lensmen series....one of the best sci fi series ALL time. I bought this copy to read again and add to our EE Doc Smith Collection in our family library.

Some do not think Masters of the Vortex was a Lensmen series book, but it was as there are Lensmen as minor characters in the book and the book takes place in the Lensmen "universe" using Lensmen terminology, inertia propulsion, same body armor, sidearms etc.

The main character is Neal Cloud a "nucleonicist" nuclear scientist. We see his wife and kids instantly killed and vaporized in their house by a atomic vortex with internal temperatures like the sun has. These atomic vortexes are getting more numerous and threatening several of civilizations inhabited planets.

Neal Cloud has a super fast calculating mind able to do many differential equations simultaneously in his head. With Lensmen help supplying a fast, small shielded ship and body armor against the massive potential lethal radiation from the vortexes, he starts putting out vortexes using super destructive bombs and his calculating super mind allowing him to know exactly when and where to launch his weapons.

He meets a level 3 mid level telepathic women who becomes his future soul mate and helps him develop his great mind to use his hidden great telepathic abilities. Neal Cloud becomes humankinds only level 6 telepath. Together they visit other worlds including one that has highly intelligent cat people with tails. Also other evil races that want the secret of the "blasters" inertia drive and much FTL ship abilities. We see him losing an arm in alien battle but using advanced Lensmen medical technology grows a new arm.

Lots of fighting and battle action. No boring parts. I read this 192 page book in one day and could not put it down. Some of the other Lensmen books were a little better.

I won't ruin the great ending for you explaining what these atomic vortexes really are. A very good last book in the EPIC Lensmen 5 star plus series. Masters of the Vortex 5 stars and proudly added to our Sci Fi Hall of Fame EE Doc Smith collection in our family library.

Re-reading Doc Smith for the umpteenth time. still good reading
EE Doc Smith, was one of the first masters of space operas, and his imagination shines through. During that time the concepts of women, and automation were drastically different than today's. The main negative is that the book was scanned with an OCR program, which made many errors which distract from the reading experience.
An enjoyable and fast paced adventure that introduced several concepts that were revolutionary at the time.

This is a full novel based on his Vortex Blaster short story.
Great old-school si-fi. However, there are many typos (as seems to be the case in man of these old releases). I guess its too expensive to hire an editor, but could someone figure out how to crowd-source fixes to the many errors?
After the lensman series., this book at first seemed out of place. However having read it a few times after re reading that series, Masters of the Vortex did in its own way close the series.
In a way it is a lesson we may do well to draw on as we seek intelligent life in the Cosmos.
What we seek, may be very similar to us, but it could also be so alien we don't even perceive it all.
This last part of the Lensman series picks up a different thread of the times and circumstances of the Lensman. Not specifically tied to the blood lines of the Kinnisons, the book maintains Doc Smith's space opera while opening up the story to inform the reader of other events which were occurring in the galaxy. The most interesting part of the book is the introduction of the theme that telepathy could be learned, or trained, and did not require a specific bloodline or heredity to be part of a person's makeup. A good read, but the reader should be aware that the story is a separate, stand-alone story from the main Lensman saga.
If this ebook was properly edited it would get 5 stars! But even though the named one of the chapters wrong--“3 Cloud Loses an Arm” is called “3 Cloud Loses an Ann”--in this kindle version I still give it 4 stars, because it is such a great story it is worth having to correct it. I consider this a Lensman Universe book instead of part of the Lensman Series because the main character is not a Lensman. It does not really matter where you place it as it is a great story as all Smith’s Stories are.
